Hello!
My name's Sarah, and I'm a 24 yr old aspiring photographer based out of Northeast Ohio. I graduated from Kent State University with my BA in History, and I'm looking towards a masters in textile and clothing history. On top of volunteering at local historical societies and sites, I've interned and worked for the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum and The North Canton Heritage Society, The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, and The National First Ladies' Library & Museum. Each of these public history sites has given me a chance to work hands on with archives, collections, textiles, and photographs.
I think photography is a wonderful way of tying together history, fashion, art, and emotions. I hope through my work to capture the essence of the people I know and to express my strong feelings and experiences based on the beauty and wonderful sadness found in life. I find inspiration in both old and new photographs as well as in the people and places that surround me everyday.
Photography began as a hobby for me in October of 2010. I felt a strong urge for a new kind of creative outlet and found it through this art form. In April of 2011, I was lucky enough to shoot promo shots for composer Dorian Wallace; I had a blast and felt that I grew as a photographer because of the experience. Since then I've shot promo shots for other area musicians, including the Tosca Abigail Band, Brandon Covey, Cody J. Martin, and Joe Vitale Jr., done 4 sessions of senior portraits for my sister, a wedding, and gone on various shoots with local photographers Jera Anderson and Adam Kurkey, as well as other students from my campus (for example, the inset picture was taken by my friend Kyle Richards!).
As I'm hoping to enter in to the curatorial field, the importance of photography to museums and to history in general has been impressed within me. I hope to continue this artistic endeavor both for self fulfillment and for history's sake. I hope that through my work I can help document life, celebrate individuals, and to express the beauty of the blessings and feelings given me.
